Over 85% of the Dubai Waste Management Centre is now complete.
Announced by Dubai Municipality, the centre will be the largest waste-to-energy plant in the world.
Construction on the project began in 2021 and aims to achieve sustainable development goals and reduce the emirate’s carbon footprint.
With the project, the goal is to reduce and divert waste from landfills by 2030.
Located in the Al Warsan area in Dubai, the first phase of the project will be ready by 2023 and the entire project will be completed by 2024 and will convert 45% of waste into renewable energy.
His Excellency Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said, “Dubai has always sought to be a pioneer in the field of waste-to-energy. By reducing the amount of solid waste and providing alternative sources for generating clean energy, the project will contribute to achieving a sustainable and eco-friendly model of waste management. With the world’s largest operational capacity, DWMC will process 1.9 million tonnes of waste annually and convert it into renewable energy, generating enough energy to power 135,000 homes.”
