Earlier this month, the Emirates Drug Establishment (EDE) approved a new weight loss treatment in the UAE, and this one skips the needles!

The treatment, called Foundayo is expected to be available in the Emirates from May this year for eligible patients under strict medical supervision. The UAE is the second country in the world to register the medication, developed by global pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

Who Can Take The Pill?

Firstly, Foundayo is not meant for casual or cosmetic use. It will be available only though prescription and under strict medical supervision.

The treatment will be prescribed to adults who are obese and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. Those who are overweight, and have a BMI above 27, with at least one related health condition, are also allowed to take the pill.

What Tests Are Needed To Take The Pill?

Before taking the pill, doctors will access each case. Patients will be asked to undergo a proper medical evaluation which covers:

  • Lipid profile test
  • Liver and kidney function test
  • Thyroid test
  • Blood sugar levels
  • Weight and BMI
  • Family history

Patients who have cancer, specific endocrine disorders, pregnant and breast feeding women must avoid taking the pill.

The tablet has to be taken once daily, without restrictions related to food or water, offering a more convenient alternative to injectable treatments. However, authorities clarified that this is not a quick fix and must be taken only under medical supervision.

What About The Price?

While there is no confirmation on the cost of the pill, it is expected to range between Dhs 800 and Dhs 1,500.

Clinical trials of the pill have demonstrated promising results, including significant weight reduction when used alongside lifestyle modification guidance. Participants receiving the highest dose recorded an average weight loss of 12.4%.
