The Emirates Mars Mission is celebrating the first anniversary of the Hope Probe entering the Mars orbit.
The historic event took place on 9 February 2021 and set the UAE on the map as the fifth county to go to Mars and the first Arab country to achieve the feat.
Since entering the Red Planet's orbit, the probe has made 170 rotations around Mars and has collected scientific data, that will be accessible to interested individuals, scientists and researchers.
The Hope Probe has in the past year collected over 1,000 gigabytes of new data, which is stored in a scientific data centre in the UAE.
Over the course of six years since the launch of the Hope Probe was announced on 16 July 2014 by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the team worked hard to launch the project in time for the UAE's 50th celebration, when these projects usually take over 10 to 12 years to complete.
The Hope Probe has accomplished a lot in a short span and took the first image of Mars on 14 February 2021, captured a picture of the largest volcano on Mars and the largest known volcano in the solar system, images of the three volcanoes close to Mars equator, the summit of Ascarios, the summit of Pavonis and the summit of Arcia and many such feats.
The probe will continue its mission till mid-2023 and will possibly extend for another two years.
