The UAE is considered one of the top countries in the world for implementing road safety systems, and the government’s continuous efforts have brought down road traffic deaths by 34.2 percent in five years, down from 712 in 2014 to 468 in 2018.
The report, released by the Ministry of Interior, further indicates the decline in the number of serious traffic accidents by 24.1 percent down from 4,895 in 2014 to 3,712 in 2018.
According to the government news agency, WAM, the ministry is working hard to meet the national index set to significantly reduce road traffic deaths by 2021.
Some of the steps that Federal Traffic Law lists to enhance road safety in the UAE include deterrent penalties for violating speeding, reckless driving, not adhering to traffic signs and black points for serious violations.
Other rules that contribute are fines and other penalties, including revoking licences, impounding of vehicles and even imprisonment for committing serious road traffic violations. Drivers who accumulate 24 black points will have their licences revoked and will need to reappear and take the RTA road test to get the driving licence back.
