In a major move to strengthen the city’s infrastructure and climate resilience, Dubai Municipality has awarded contracts worth Dhs 1.439 billion for four new critical flood-prevention projects under the Tasreef initiative. This came under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to develop future-ready and sustainable infrastructure across the emirate.
The projects form part of the broader Tasreef rain water drainage network, which is the largest rain water collection system in Dubai and the most operationally efficient system of its kind in the region.
Key Highlights Of The New Projects
-
The projects will serve major areas including Nad Al Hamar, Dubai International Airport, Al Garhoud, Al Rashidiya, Al Quoz, Zabeel, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, and Al Badaa.
-
The projects are expected to be completed by 2027.
-
Over 36km of new drainage lines will be constructed and connected to the main Tasreef tunnel.
-
These projects will enhance drainage efficiency, reduce flood risks, and significantly cut down operational and maintenance costs.
The larger Tasreef project, with an estimated total cost of Dhs 30 billion, aims to reduce the cost of construction, operation and maintenance of rain-water stations by 20 per cent, while increasing the lifespan of Dubai’s rain water drainage infrastructure. Tasreef project is expected to increase the drainage capacity by 700%, covering Dubai's rainwater drainage needs over the next 100 years, according to the official sources.
