Abu Dhabi is stepping up its smart transport game, expanding autonomous taxi services to Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island, two of the capital’s busiest and most vibrant areas. The move marks a major milestone in the emirate’s push for innovative, tech-driven mobility.
Announced by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) in partnership with WeRide, Uber, and Tawasul Transport, the expansion will bring self-driving taxis to the city's major financial, residential, and commercial hubs. The two areas were selected due to their complex traffic patterns and high demand for reliable urban mobility.
Already in service across Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes to Zayed International Airport, the initiative supports Abu Dhabi’s goal for 25% of all trips to be smart or autonomous by 2040. The ITC also plans further rollouts across Abu Dhabi.
With 44 autonomous vehicles already in operation, Abu Dhabi now boasts the region’s largest active driverless fleet.
