The Digital School, a Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives project, along with Emirates Red Crescent, and UAE-based recycling company Ecyclex, have launched the 'DYOD: Donate Your Own Device' campaign, to collect 10,000 used electronic devices to refurbish, and donate to underprivileged students around the world.
The campaign aims to provide students globally, with access to education through digital platforms.
His Excellency Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, Director-General of the Prime Minister's Office, and Chairman of the Board of Directors of The Digital School, added that the campaign will help in bridging the digital and knowledge gap for underprivileged students around the world.
Every year, over 50 million tons of electronic waste is created globally, which is equivalent to 800 laptops being thrown out every second.
To donate to the campaign, individuals and organisations can hand in used electronics or make monetary contributions through the Donate Your Own Device website, and by sending an SMS to 2441 for etisalat by e& users, and 3441 for du.
The Digital School, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in November 2020, aims to continue to provide educational opportunities to students in remote and developing areas. The school educates over 60,000 students from eight countries in Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Mauritania, Lebanon, Colombia, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. Over 1,500 teachers are part of the school, teaching in Arabic, English, French, and Spanish.
