The first high-speed hydrogen refuelling station is being constructed in Abu Dhabi.
Located in Masdar City, the station by ADNOC will create hydrogen from water.
Hydrogen does not emit carbon dioxide, and as it has the highest energy mass of any fuel, the vehicles will be able to run for longer and can be refuelled quicker, when compared to battery-powered electric vehicles.
The station will be completed by the end of 2023, with a second station added in Dubai, where more information will be shared.
ADNOC has also partnered with Toyota Motor Corporation and Al Futtaim Motors to test the station, with a fleet of clean hydrogen-powered vehicles. Through the pilot programme, the fleet will be assessed to see how hydrogen-powered vehicles can be utilised to reduce carbon emissions by 25% by 2030.
His Excellency Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, and Managing Director and Group CEO of ADNOC said, "Hydrogen will be a critical fuel for the energy transition, helping to decarbonise economies at scale, and it is a natural extension of our core business. Through this pilot programme, we will gather important data on how hydrogen transportation technology performs as we continue to develop the UAE’s hydrogen infrastructure."
