During the Nature at Night event hosted by Emirates Nature-WWF, a new scorpion species was discovered in the UAE.
Found at Wadi Wurayah in Umm Al Quwain, the group of 20 volunteers were given a list of species to look out for along with UV lights and equipment to spot the creatures at night.
A group of around 50 scorpions were found, which were identified as Hottentotta Jayakari, the black-tailed alligator back scorpion.
However, one of the species found did not resemble the Hottentotta Jayakari and was identified as an Orthochirus scorpion, which are small black scorpions that have rounded tail segments with a pitted exoskeleton.
Orthochirus have short and fat tails, which the species tend to hold close to their bodies. The sting from the scorpion is not lethal, but quite painful.
To get a better insight, the species will be closely observed under a microscope.
