From 1 July, a tariff of 25 fils will be imposed on single-use bags.
Previously only applicable to plastic bags, the tariff will now apply to all plastic, paper, biodegradable plastic and plant-based biodegradable materials.
The tariff will be added to bags that are 57 micrometres thick.
All stores have to add the tariff for single-use bags and free alternatives are not encouraged.
The tariff will be stated on the shopping bill when using single-use bags.
The initiative aims to make Dubai more sustainable and in the next two years, a complete ban will be imposed.
As plastic does not decompose for years, it contributes to litter and pollution and is known to cause danger to marine life and animals.
