UAE Celebrates Emirati Women’s Day

The UAE celebrates Emirati Women’s Day today, on 28 August, under the theme 'Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years'. The occasion highlights five decades of progress since the establishment of the General Women’s Union (GWU), founded by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Mother of the Nation, Chairwoman of the GWU, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation.

The theme reflects the spirit of partnership and community that has defined the UAE’s approach to women’s empowerment, ensuring women play a central role in the country’s development while preserving Emirati values and traditions.

Her Excellency Noura Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Secretary General of the GWU, said Emirati Women’s Day is a national moment to reflect on the accomplishments of Emirati women across education, the economy, and public life.

The UAE has become a regional and global leader in gender equality, ranking thirteenth worldwide and first regionally in the UNDP Gender Equality Index. Key milestones include a 2018 legislation mandating equal pay for men and women, the launch of the National Strategy for Women Empowerment 2023-2031, and the appointment of women to 50% of Federal National Council seats. Emirati women now also hold 26% of ministerial roles and play vital roles in business, technology, education and diplomacy.

Beyond national efforts, the UAE supports international initiatives such as the Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Women, Peace and Security initiative and the Arab Women’s Economic Empowerment Observatory, reinforcing the UAE’s global commitment to women’s leadership and progress.
