Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) along with Cruise are set to operate Cruise autonomous vehicles for taxi and e-Hail services in Dubai.
The operations have begun this month with two Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles (EVs) preparing digital maps for the Cruise self-driving vehicles.
The digital mapping is in preparation for the launch of the service by 2023, making Dubai the first city in the world to operate Cruise self-driving vehicles outside the United States of America commercially.
The vehicles are being tested in Jumeirah and will be driven by specialist drivers using a high-resolution map of the physical environment, created by using specialised mapping vehicles equipped with a suite of sensors including LiDAR, cameras and others.
The cars will initially be released in limited numbers and reach 4,000 by 2030, to make 25% of total mobility journeys in Dubai into self-driving transport.
