Al Ain Zoo has launched a series of animal welfare programmes to help protected endangered species, like the hippopotamus.
The hippopotamuses have been placed within specialised enclosures, with three residing at the hippopotamus exhibit and six living in a breeding enclosure.
The programme will help in increasing their numbers through research and breeding and will then set the animals back into their natural habitats.
The hippopotamuses have their natural habitat recreated for their comfort and also have a team of veterinarian staff, assisting them.
The Hippo Exhibit at Al Ain Zoo offers the hippopotamus a unique underwater exhibit built-in with an automatic water filtration system.
