The Dubai Municipality has added more green areas in Dubai and over the course of 2021 has planted over 170,000 trees.
Around 466 trees were planted every day in various spots including roads and squares.
The planting target that was set was also crossed by 130%, with more trees being planted this year.
The initiative aims to enhance environmental sustainability as the population grows and urban areas are developed.
Local trees like the Ghaf and Sidr trees have been planted as they are the ideal trees for UAE soil.
His Excellency Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said, “Over the past year, we significantly re-engineered our processes for horticultural work on Dubai's main and secondary roads, squares and residential areas. We also introduced new trees that can withstand the UAE’s environment, such as Al Busida and Green Cassia trees, which are grown at the Municipality’s nurseries. In addition, we planted trees that can help prevent sand encroachment on all external roads. In the coming years, we aim to intensify and diversify the planting of trees in open desert areas by using local species that can tolerate Dubai’s climate, which in turn will enhance our ability to combat climate change.”
