As part of the Dubai 10X Initiative facilitated by the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF) and Dubai Municipality, the city has developed a groundbreaking project to transport and process waste to energy. The venture is called the “Wastenizer” project and it seeks to address the 3.5 million tons of waste that the Emirate of Dubai produces, at a daily operating cost of Dhs 2.3 million.
The Wastenizer system will generate 17,500 tons of ash that will be used to produce green concrete. It utilizes technology that heats up any type of waste to break it down to its chemical components and generate clean electrical energy. In partnership with companies within the artificial intelligence industries as well as infrastructure, transportation and waste-to-energy, the project will start its pilot phase in the fourth quarter of 2018.
The revolutionary system was launched by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council and Chairman of DFF’s Board of Trustees at the 6th World Government Summit as part of 26 other approved projects.
“The project represents a significant step forward that will cement Dubai’s leading global position. The Dubai Municipality plays a key role in the project, as it is committed to organising and managing services in order to ensure they meet the highest standards.” His Excellency Dawood Abdul Rahman Abdullah Al Hajiri, Director General of Dubai Municipality said “We must face the challenges and strive to meet the project’s strategic goals, which seek to make Dubai the first and only city in the world to use artificial intelligence in transporting and processing waste to generate clean and sustainable energy.”
The Wastenizer project will also contribute to the Dubai Intergrated Waste Management Master Plan which seeks to empty 100% of Dubai’s landfills by year 2030. At this rate, Dubai is sure to become a leading city in clean energy and sustainable innovation, as well as 10 years ahead of any other city in the world.
