As summer exams approach, students across Dubai face the challenge of balancing revision, leisure time and other responsibilities, often facing anxiety during the exam season. For many, this period can be overwhelming, with increased academic pressure and the struggle to balance relaxation with preparation. However, with the right strategies and support, students can turn this into a productive and stress-free experience. Now, you have the ideal opportunity to set a structured study plan and build effective habits for success.
To provide expert guidance, Connector spoke to experts in the field of education, who shared valuable insights on how students can optimise their exam preparation.
Finding The Right Balance Between Study And Leisure
A key concern for students during public holidays and weekend breaks is striking a balance between study and leisure. Chandini Misra, Principal at Repton Al Barsha, notes, "I always say 'revision doesn’t need to rule your holidays'. Set a realistic plan that includes breaks, hobbies and family time. A couple of focused hours a day is far better than a full day of distracted study. Remember that our brains are not wired to focus properly on more than one thing at once, multi-tasking is a myth! Remove distractions and you will definitely learn and remember more".
Susan Walker, Head of Upper Seniors at Brighton College Dubai, says, "We recommend that pupils allocate specific times for study while also ensuring they enjoy regular downtime to recharge. A structured study plan, such as the Pomodoro Technique, where students study in focused 25-minute blocks followed by 5-minute breaks, can help maintain concentration and prevent burnout".

Managing Exam Pressure And Anxiety
Exam anxiety is a common challenge and experts stress the importance of stress management strategies for students. Susan Walker from Brighton College Dubai addresses the importance of practical strategies in managing stress like mindfulness exercises, ensuring adequate sleep, and maintaining a balanced diet.
Also highlighting the practical guide for students and parents, Susan Walker of Brighton College Dubai adds, "We encourage pupils to reflect on their learning styles through meta-cognitive strategies, helping them feel more in control of their preparation. Additionally, we stress the importance of a balanced lifestyle, sleep, exercise and healthy eating play a crucial role in managing stress and improving cognitive function".
Chandini Misra from Repton Al Barsha foregrounds the importance of compassion and patience with oneself during times of preparation, "Be kind to yourself. Nerves are natural, but preparation builds confidence. Use tools like mindfulness, fresh air and short bursts of revision with plenty of pauses. Remind yourself: progress over perfection. Don’t fear the anxiety. Some tension is a sign that you care, and that you are challenging yourself. Know that all feelings pass and that a little bit of nervousness can actually help you perform".
Avoiding Distractions And Procrastination
With digital distractions everywhere, staying focused can be a real challenge. However, education experts also notes how technology can both be a distraction and a tool for productivity. Susan Walker from Brighton College Dubai says, "Students should choose a quiet, well-lit space free from interruptions, and keep their study materials organised and within easy reach. A dedicated study area, rather than studying in bed or on the sofa, signals to the brain that it’s time to focus. We also recommend using apps that block distracting websites and turning off notifications on mobile devices. By structuring study time with specific, achievable goals and taking regular, short breaks, pupils can avoid procrastination and stay on track".
Some experts however suggest that even the presence of mobile phones can be distracting to somebody who is about to get into serious preparations. Practising restraint and also staying motivated through periodic breaks can go a long way in consistent and effective preparations for exams. "Start small. Set a timer for 25 minutes and focus fully and put phones away in a separate room. The presence of a phone, even if it is not being used, is a natural distraction for your mind. Enjoy short breaks. These bite-sized chunks feel manageable and keep motivation high", says Chandini Misra from Repton Al Barsha.

Creating A Structured Revision Plan
A well-structured revision plan helps students stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Guiding students to break their revision into small, manageable units and set realistic goals and expectations is very important, according to the experts.
"Our 'Ready, Set, Succeed' guide includes exam timetables and subject-specific revision tips, which help pupils plan effectively. We encourage pupils to review their learning regularly and reflect on whether they are truly understanding the material or simply memorising it. If pupils understand meta-cognition, the way they learn, they can then adopt strategies that help them study more effectively and avoid the stress of last-minute cramming", says Susan Walker from Brighton College Dubai.
Chandini Misra from Repton Al Barsha suggest keeping the revision simple and visual, "Use a weekly calendar with subjects, goals and time off clearly marked. Seeing balance on paper helps reduce that overwhelming feeling and builds a sense of control".
It is also important to take additional steps if necessary, like using flashcards, doing practice tests and asking your peers or family members to quiz you on important topics. These can motivate you to keep going and help you recognise your weak spots as well.
How Parents Can Offer Support Without Adding Pressure
Parental support plays a significant role in a student’s exam preparation. Susan Walker from Brighton College Dubai suggests that parents should help create a quiet, distraction-free study environment, "A tidy, well-lit, and organised space can significantly enhance focus and reduce anxiety. We also suggest that parents set clear boundaries regarding phone use, possibly using built-in app restrictions to block distractions during study sessions. It is crucial for parents to encourage open communication about their child's progress and well-being, while also modelling a balanced approach to technology and screen time".
Chandini Misra from Repton Al Barsha shared another important message to parents, "Encourage without pressure. A warm meal, a listening ear and a quiet space to revise go a long way. Let your child know that you’re proud of their effort and courage, not just their results".
Both experts agree that open communication is key. Encourage your child to discuss their progress and well-being without fear of judgment. Providing reassurance and focusing on effort rather than outcomes can make a significant difference in reducing stress

Setting Up For Success
Preparing for summer exams doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With structured revision, stress management techniques, and the right parental support, students can excel without burnout. Schools, teachers and parents all play a role in ensuring that exam season is a period of learning, growth and self-improvement rather than just a test of academic performance.
By following these expert-backed strategies, students in Dubai can step into their exams feeling confident, well-prepared, and in control. And remember, success isn’t just about grades, it’s about developing lifelong skills in resilience, focus and self-discipline.
