Don't Miss The Pink Moon Phenomenon This Weekend

Skywatchers across the UAE are in for a celestial treat as the Pink Moon, the first full moon of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, is set to rise on the evening of Sunday, 13 April. While the moon won’t actually appear pink, its name comes from early Native American traditions referencing the seasonal bloom of pink wildflowers that mark the start of spring.

In Dubai, the Pink Moon will rise at approximately 7.08pm and set at 5.56am the next morning. The best time to catch its most dramatic view is right after moonrise, when it appears more luminous near the horizon.

Adding to its charm, this year’s Pink Moon is also a micromoon—a full moon that occurs when the moon is at its apogee, or farthest point from Earth. This makes it appear slightly smaller and dimmer than usual, creating a subtle yet special viewing experience.

To celebrate the occasion, the Dubai Astronomy Group (DAG) is hosting a public stargazing event at Al Qudra Desert from 6pm to 9pm. The evening promises a mix of science, culture, and fun activities including telescope viewing of the Pink Moon, a talk on the myths and meanings behind the celestial event, astrophotography sessions and snacks and refreshments for the attendees. Registrations ticket prices starts at Dhs 150. You can register at DAG's official website.
