The UAE Cyber Security Council (CSC) has raised concerns over the dangers of using public Wi-Fi, revealing that more than 12,000 cyber breaches have been recorded through such networks since the start of 2025. These incidents account for 35% of all cyberattacks reported in the country.
According to CSC, hackers are increasingly exploiting free and unsecured networks in public spaces such as airports, cafés, and shopping centres to steal passwords, banking details, and other sensitive information. While such connections may be convenient, they often lack the necessary safeguards to keep users protected.
CSC advised residents to take extra precautions, including avoiding financial transactions over public Wi-Fi, activating multi-factor authentication, and keeping devices updated. It also recommended using trusted VPN applications, which encrypt digital activity and prevent unauthorised access.
Other protective steps include enabling safe browsing features on web browsers and avoiding logging into sensitive accounts while connected to open networks. CSC also cautioned that attackers can use these channels to install spyware, redirect users to fake websites, or intercept private calls.
By increasing awareness of these risks, authorities aim to strengthen cyber resilience across the UAE.
