If you’ve recently come across an offer that looks too good to be true, especially online, you might want to pause before clicking or paying.
Abu Dhabi Police are warning the public about a growing number of online scams targeting residents through fake websites, misleading investment platforms, and fraudulent social media ads.
Here’s what you need to watch out for:
- Fake luxury watch sales: Scammers advertise expensive watches at big discounts. People transfer money expecting a deal, but receive cheap counterfeits instead.
- Fraudulent investment platforms: These websites look professional and even use fake celebrity endorsements. They show fake profits to keep victims investing, but when it’s time to withdraw, users get locked out.
- Fake websites: Some scammers create lookalike pages of well-known retailers, restaurants, or insurance providers. Once victims enter their credit card information, their money disappears through unauthorised charges.
- Fake job offers: Especially around major events, scammers create fake recruitment sites or social media pages that mimic real companies. Victims are asked to pay application fees or other charges for jobs that don’t exist.
- Vehicle number and property scams: These involve requests for deposits on non-existent plate numbers or fake property listings.
Police advice:
-
Don’t share your banking details, PINs, passwords, or credit card numbers with anyone.
-
Be cautious when buying items online or engaging with offers that come via social media.
-
Banks will never ask for your personal financial details over the phone or through messaging apps.
Abu Dhabi Police also urged residents to report a scam or suspicious activity by either contacting the Aman Service on 8002626 or sending a text message to 2828.
Stay alert, share this with your friends and family, and help others avoid falling for these scams.
