The UAE Food Bank has teamed up with the National Initiative to Reduce Food Loss and Waste (Ne'ma), to launch two major programs aimed at combating hunger and food waste during Ramadan 2025. The initiatives, 'One Million Meals from Surplus Food' and 'Ne’ma Community Fridges', will redistribute excess food to vulnerable groups while promoting environmental sustainability.
As part of 'One Million Meals from Surplus Food' initiative, over 75 hotels across the UAE will participate in donating untouched surplus food to those in need. Since its launch in 2022, the program has reduced food waste by 47% in participating hotels and expanded its reach by 75%. Inedible food waste will be recycled into compost and oil through the Reloop app, supporting the UAE’s circular economy goals.
Simultaneously, Ne’ma Community Fridges will be placed in high-traffic locations, including Mall of the Emirates, allowing easy access to surplus meals for workers and low-income families. The fridges will be regularly restocked under strict food safety guidelines.
Officials emphasise that this partnership goes beyond Ramadan. It’s a long-term strategy to cut food waste nationwide. Ne’ma highlights the role of technology in scaling impact, while UAE Food Bank stresses the initiative’s alignment with values of dignity, generosity and sustainability.
With 1 million meals set for redistribution and innovative waste-reduction measures, this collaboration strengthens the UAE’s commitment to food security, sustainability, and social welfare. Residents can support the cause by minimising personal food waste and spreading awareness
