Travel Time On Sheikh Zayed Road And Al Khail Road Slashed

RTA / X

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has rolled out a series of rapid traffic upgrades that have significantly reduced congestion and travel time between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, especially during rush hour.

Among the major improvements is the widening of east-bound exit road from Sheikh Zayed Road to  D69 Al Meydan Street, doubling from one to two lanes and increasing the exit's handling capacity from 1,500 to 3,000 vehicles per hour, and has resulted in travel times between Sheikh Zayed and Al Khail Road being slashed by up to 40% during peak hours.

In addition, the bridge over First Al Khail Road has been expanded from three lanes to four lanes in both directions, pushing its capacity up from 4,500 to 6,000 vehicles per hour. This benefits vehicles travelling between Al Khail Road, Al Meydan Street, Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Hadiqa Street, which connects Sheikh Zayed Road with Al Safa.

The upgrade also includes expansion of the connecting ramps between the surface road and the bridge over First Al Khail Road from one lane to two, improving access for vehicles heading towards Al Meydan Street and Al Khail Road. RTA reports that this improved traffic flow, and reduced congestion and waiting times by more than 50%, particularly during midday and evening peak hours.

These enhancements are part of RTA’s wider strategy to implement over 75 traffic improvement projects across high-density areas in Dubai this year, aimed at increasing road efficiency, reducing travel delays, and boosting overall mobility.
