Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, has been chosen by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as the global host city for the 2025 edition of International Jazz Day. The event, celebrated annually on 30 April to commemorate jazz and its embodiment of artistic freedom, will be presented through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), and UNESCO.
In 2025, Abu Dhabi, designated as the global host city by UNESCO, will highlight Arabic Jazz by incorporating classical instruments like the Oud, Qanoon, and Ney. As a UNESCO Creative City of Music, Abu Dhabi will demonstrate the fusion of local musical heritage with Jazz traditions spanning several decades.
In addition to the concert, educational initiatives and community engagement are central to the day. On 30 April 2025, Abu Dhabi will introduce music education programs in local schools throughout the city. Universities like Berklee Abu Dhabi and NYU Abu Dhabi, alongside other UAE-based institutions, will host workshops and masterclasses in their lecture halls, exhibition areas, and auditoriums. Emphasis will be placed on involving young musicians, inspiring them to nurture their passion for music and explore opportunities in jazz as a profession.
Commenting on this, His Excellency Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said, "We are honoured that Abu Dhabi has been selected as the Global Host for the 2025 edition of International Jazz Day. As a UNESCO Creative City of Music, Abu Dhabi has long been a beacon of musical innovation, where traditional Arabian melodies blend seamlessly with global genres, creating a vibrant and unique cultural tapestry. Hosting International Jazz Day reaffirms our dedication to the arts and provides a global stage to showcase our dynamic music scene."
