Dubai Police is warning residents to stay alert after several people were arrested for promoting fraudulent discounts on traffic fines. The suspects offered victims reductions of 30% to 70%, only to pay the fines using stolen bank card details and pocket a 'service fee' in return.
Investigations found that the fraudsters either obtained credit card data through online scams or bought it from illegal sources. Victims were led to believe they were getting a legal discount, when in fact, they were unknowingly participating in a criminal act.
Authorities stressed that this is a dual offence, constituting both cyber theft and financial fraud. Dubai Police cautioned that anyone who knowingly engages in these schemes could be considered an accomplice under UAE law.
To protect yourself, settle traffic fines only through official channels such as the Dubai Police app, website, or authorised payment centres. Community members should also report any suspicious offers or activity through the 'Police Eye' feature on the Dubai Police app or by calling 901.
