Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police General Headquarters have collaborated to enhance public awareness and offer educational support to cyclists and electric scooter users. Their joint campaign seeks to promote traffic safety messages, specifically targeting bicycle and e-scooter riders, aligning with Dubai's Traffic Safety Strategy and its goal to make Dubai more bicycle-friendly.
The campaign is being shared through direct field visits and guidance adverts in the media and social networks. Since the beginning of the year, they have conducted 90 awareness visits to different places, reaching around 3,000 cyclists and e-scooter riders. During these initiatives, participants received first-hand information about safety rules, and traffic laws, and insights into the reasons behind traffic accidents. Additionally, they were educated on how to contact service centres or report any violations.
Commenting on this, Abdullah Yousef Al Ali, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency, RTA, said, “In collaboration with our strategic partner, Dubai Police, we had intensified our efforts to educate cyclists and electric scooter users on traffic safety requirements as well as the locations and routes of the dedicated lanes. The campaign is launched in preparation for the winter as the use of bicycles and e-scooters tends to rise.”
Through this campaign, the authorities are urging riders to follow specific speed limits that vary by location. For instance, in residential areas and along beaches, the maximum speed is 20kmh, while it's 30kmh on the Meydan lane and streets shared with vehicles. There are no set speed limits for Seih Al-Salam and Al-Qudra lanes.
Major General Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, Director of the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police, stressed the commitment to promoting traffic awareness and responsible behaviour among all road users.
Cyclists and e-scooter riders have been informed about traffic rules, authorised riding lanes, and the importance of complying with security, safety, and regulatory requirements in designated areas to ensure user safety. The awareness efforts also emphasised the essential safety conditions and precautions for using these modes of transportation, emphasising compliance with approved roads and lanes and following traffic rules.
Riders were also educated about the significance of wearing helmets that meet safety standards, using reflective vests during their rides, installing a bright white light at the front and a red reflective light at the back, and ensuring that bikes and e-scooters have fully operational brakes.
Dubai Police recognised and celebrated a number of outstanding drivers for their valuable efforts in reducing road accident fatalities and their dedication to adhering to traffic rules.
