The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a Dhs 689 million project aimed at enhancing Hessa Street. This initiative aligns with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai. It also reflects the commitment of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, to ensure that Dubai's road infrastructure keeps pace with the rapid development witnessed by the city.
The Hessa Street project, costing Dhs 689 million, spans 4.5km from the Sheikh Zayed Road intersection to the Al Khail Road intersection. It involves renovating four intersections on Hessa Street, Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. This project will double the number of lanes on Hessa Street, going from two to four in each direction, effectively increasing its capacity by 100% to accommodate 8,000 vehicles per hour. Additionally, it will include the construction of a 13.5km long cycling track.
Speaking about this development, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said, “Hessa Street Improvement Project is a vital project for developing the infrastructure of the roads network. The project serves several residential and development communities, such as Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha residential area, and Jumeirah Village Circle. The population of areas served by the project is expected to reach more than 640,000 individuals by 2030. The project will double the capacity of Hessa Street from 8,000 vehicles to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions."
Al Tayer also pointed out that the project includes building a 13.5km track for bicycles and e-scooters. This track is 4.5 meters wide, with dedicated lanes of 2.5 meters for bicycles and e-scooters and 2 meters for pedestrians. It will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills through Hessa Street, benefiting residential areas like Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, and Barsha Heights. Importantly, it will enhance transportation connections, including the first and last-mile options, by linking to the Dubai Internet City Metro Station and various nearby commercial and service destinations.
The new cycling track has something special with two bridges. The first one goes over Sheikh Zayed Road, and the second one crosses Al Khail Road. The second bridge is 5 meters wide with 3 meters for bicycles and e-scooters and 2 meters for pedestrians. The design of the Al Khail Road bridge draws inspiration from the unique geometry of the surrounding environment.
