In the latest discovery, archaeologists have found a gemstone which is believed to be the world’s oldest natural pearl. The discovery was made on Marawah Island, which lies just off the coast of Mirfa town, about 170 km west of Abu Dhabi.
The pearl has been studied by scientists who have determined that the pearl is around 8,000 years old and dates back to 5,800 to 5,600 BC, and the discovery is an example of the earliest known evidence for pearling in the world as yet.
The pearl will now go on display at Louvre Abu Dhabi as part of the '10,000 Years of Luxury' exhibition that opens on 30 October, after which it will be moved to be displayed at Zayed National Museum.
