The UAE Cybersecurity Council has urged residents to take a simple but vital step in protecting themselves online, namely, to keeping devices updated. Smartphones, laptops, web browsers, routers, and even smart home devices are among the most vulnerable to cyberattacks, especially when connected to open networks.

Officials explained that cybercriminals often exploit outdated systems, targeting known weaknesses to steal data, spread malware, or breach networks. Enabling automatic updates ensures that the latest security patches are installed, closing these gaps before they can be exploited.

The Council warned that neglecting updates could expose families to risks such as data theft or device hijacking. Experts recommend enabling automatic updates on all devices, checking update settings regularly, reviewing privacy options, and monitoring unusual activity.

With daily life increasingly tied to digital devices, from online banking and shopping to smart home systems, regular updates act as a 'digital shield', offering the most effective defence against cyber threats. This reminder underscores the importance of digital vigilance in safeguarding both personal data and household security.
