Abu Dhabi Removes 120kph Minimum Speed Limit On E311

AD Mobility / X

Abu Dhabi Mobility has officially removed the minimum speed limit of 120kph from E311Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road, a key highway connecting Dubai to Abu Dhabi. The move comes as part of ongoing traffic safety enhancements and follows widespread feedback from motorists who raised concerns about receiving unfair fines under the rule.

While the maximum speed limit remains 140kph, motorists will no longer be required to maintain the previously enforced minimum speed. Drivers on Monday reported the removal of minimum speed signage from affected road sections.

In April 2023, a minimum speed rule of 120kph was introduced on the first and second left lanes of E311 to encourage steady traffic flow and reduce driving distractions. Violators were fined Dhs 400 for not meeting the limit, although the third and last lane, used by heavy vehicles, was exempt.

The policy had drawn negative feedback from residents, especially those who received penalties while driving in congested conditions where maintaining 120kph was not feasible.

E311 begins at Seih Shuaib, right where Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Road ends at the Dubai and Abu Dhabi border. It features four lanes in each direction, supporting a capacity of up to 8,000 vehicles per hour, making it one of the most vital corridors for motorists travelling between the two emirates. As E311 remains a critical link between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, this adjustment is expected to benefit thousands of drivers daily.

The announcement also comes just days after Abu Dhabi authorities announced speed limit reductions on other highways, including E11 or Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road and E20 or Abu Dhabi to Sweihan Road. Check Connector's story HERE
