Dubai is gearing up to tackle waste and debris in its waterways through an innovative solution: the smart marine scraper. Recently introduced by Dubai Municipality, this cutting-edge technology is designed to gather floating waste from creeks and water canals across the emirate. Created by local Emirati talents in partnership with Al Khattal Boat Factory, this advanced scraper marks a notable stride in the municipality's efforts toward environmental sustainability.

What Are The Key Features Of The Marine Scraper

  • The smart marine scraper is operated remotely and can be controlled from any distance, thanks to real-time monitoring via satellite technology.
  • It utilises advanced control systems, powered by 5G networks, to execute precise marine maneuvers for efficient waste collection.
  • The scraper is equipped with secondary systems, including an intelligent marine survey system that identifies waste sites and initiates removal procedures.
  • Additionally, it features an interactive external environment system that enhances marine safety by preventing collisions automatically.
  • With enhanced productivity, the scraper can efficiently collect and transfer up to 1,000kg of floating marine waste.

The launch of the smart scraper underscores the Municipality’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable solutions and enhancing operational efficiency. Aligned with its waste management objectives, the initiative aims to enhance environmental beauty, reduce pollution, and maintain public cleanliness.

Dubai Municipality has deployed a dedicated team of 12 marine captains, 25 workers, and sailors, along with 12 marine vehicles, to oversee the cleanliness of water canals and creeks spanning 35km. This team conducts daily cleaning tasks and round-the-clock field follow-ups to ensure the consistent upkeep of Dubai’s appeal and quality of living.
