As part of its commitment to addressing climate change and fostering a more sustainable future, the UAE has been embracing diverse sustainable initiatives and innovations. The most recent addition to this effort is Abu Dhabi's inaugural trial operation of a hydrogen-powered taxi, marking a significant step towards eco-friendly transportation in the region.
The introduction of the new taxi is geared towards minimising carbon emissions in the emirate, aligning with Abu Dhabi's environmental objectives to achieve a reduction of 30 million tonnes by 2027, compared to the 2016 figure of 135 million tonnes. The trial operation will assess the efficiency of clean fuel operations, analyse the distance covered, and evaluate the quantity of hydrogen utilised. This announcement was made by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) on Thursday.
This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Tawasul Transport Company, Adnoc Distribution, and Al-Futtaim Motors, reflecting a shared commitment to curbing emissions in taxi operations and aligning with Cop28 goals.
The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) emphasised the importance of adopting eco-friendly taxis to help Abu Dhabi achieve its global sustainability targets, especially amid the accelerating global shift towards green transport systems.
