Residents of Dubai, brace yourselves for a glimpse into the future, where the payment of public transport fares will soon be able through facial recognition technology. That's right; Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is set to introduce a range of projects and initiatives that incorporate artificial intelligence and metaverse technologies. This exciting development is being unveiled at GITEX 2023, which commences today, on 16 October 2023, at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Among the varied projects that the RTA is preparing to introduce, the highlight is the smart gate. This innovative system enables passengers to conveniently pay for public transport fares (including Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, buses, taxis, and marine transport) by utilising facial recognition technology. It eliminates the need for traditional tickets, nol cards, or credit cards, making the payment process more streamlined and efficient.
The system functions by registering and identifying users through an advanced process. It employs cameras to recognise and analyse facial features in 3D. This information is converted into biometric data, which is matched with the user's image, and the fare amount is deducted from their account. Pretty impressive, isn't it? This initiative plays a pivotal role in integrating transportation services with various systems, making transactions smoother, enhancing the efficiency of services, and decreasing the reliance on cash transactions.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA said, "RTA is committed to harnessing emerging technologies and AI to boost productivity, elevate operational efficiency, and enhance customer services. This drive is aligned with the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, to foster well-being in Dubai by offering diverse options for residents with a view to transforming Dubai into the best city for living in the world."
In addition to the smart gates, RTA is set to launch a convenient service on the 'RTA Dubai Drive' app, allowing users to transfer ownership of vehicle number plates without having to visit customer service centres. The exhibits will also feature a model of the world's first electric Abra, created through 3D printing technology, and the use of AI and big data to predict the occupancy of public parking spaces.
