Tropical indoor rainforest in Dubai The Green Planet, has launched the first 'Carnivorous Plants' exhibit in the Middle East.
Visitors can get a glimpse of the Venus FlyTrap, Sundew Plant, and Pitcher Plant, at the biodome which is home to over 3,000 plants and animals.
The Venus FlyTrap is one of the most popular kind of carnivorous plant, and can be green and red in colour, based on the amount of light received. Commonly found in North Carolina in the United States, the plant has a lifespan of 20 years, and waits for insects to touch one of the hairs of the plant, before snapping shut to trap them.
Sundew Plants can be found in New Zealand and Alaska, and are the largest group of carnivorous plants with 194 species. Appealing in nature, they have sticky glands on the tip, and after insects land on the plant, the nectar produced traps them.
Commonly found in Southeast Asia, the Pitcher Plant with red to green and purple to red hues, has tube-like leaves, that can trap insects with ease. With a height of up to three feet, the plant secretes scents of nectar, making them more appealing to bugs.
Visitors can enjoy learning more about the carnivorous plants and watch them feed on insects, at workshops held daily from 1 to 3 September at 3pm at The Green Planet.
Ticket prices start at Dhs 160 and are available on The Green Planet website.
