Dubai's premier fresh food market, Waterfront Market, has been given permission by the authorities to re-open its fish, meat, dry goods and fruit and vegetable markets, and will resume business as normal for all its customers on 7 April 2020.
As part of its re-opening, Waterfront Market has implemented a range of precautionary health and safety measures in order to combat the spread of coronavirus COVID-19. A dedicated team has been assigned to implement a 24-hour cleaning programme, which includes disinfecting and sanitising all common areas in addition to their standard hygiene cleaning practices. Thermal cameras have been installed at all entrances monitor staff and customer's temperatures as they enter and a number fixed hand sanitiser units have been installed at multiple locations in order to encourage and support customers to regularly keep sanitising their hands. All customers and staff will have to adhere to physical distancing, masks and gloves have to be worn and only one family member will be allowed to do the shopping. Children will be prohibited to enter.
The markets will be open from 6am until 8pm. Cleaning and sanitisation will be continuous throughout the day, with a full deep cleaning and sanitisation programme taking place each night from 8pm.
For the daily fish auction, Waterfront Market has installed thermal cameras to monitor the temperatures of all customers, and buyers must follow the physical distancing notices in order to maintain enough distance during the auctions themselves. In addition, all staff working at Waterfront Market are being regularly checked by security for fever and any health issues and are instructed to wear face masks and hand gloves at all times.
