Government entities across Dubai will be able to begin implementing the 2026 edition of the ‘Our Flexible Summer’ initiative, introducing shorter working hours and optional four-day work weeks. Launched by the Dubai Government Human Resources Department (DGHR), the scheme runs from 29 June until 10 September 2026, aiming to enhance the quality of life for public sector employees while maintaining strict standards of service delivery.

The initiative offers participating government entities two distinct operational models designed to balance staff needs with business continuity. Under the first model, employees work seven hours per day from Monday to Thursday, and four and a half hours on Friday. The second model allows employees to work eight hours per day from Monday to Thursday, with Friday designated as a full day off, effectively creating a three-day weekend during the summer months.

In addition to these structural models, government departments retain the authority to apply remote working arrangements and standard flexible hours based on their individual operational requirements.

According to the DGHR, the policy response follows careful evaluation of employee feedback regarding the challenges of balancing professional duties with family commitments during the summer.

His Excellency Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi, Director General of the DGHR, stated that the initiative proves employee wellbeing and institutional performance are interconnected.

"The 'Our Flexible Summer' initiative has demonstrated that employee wellbeing and quality of life do not come at the expense of performance," His Excellency Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi said. "On the contrary, they are among the key enablers of institutional success and long-term sustainability. Through this initiative, we continue to develop more flexible and people-centric government work environments that enhance the employee experience and strengthen the future-readiness of government entities.”

His Excellency Abdullah Ali bin Zayed Al Falasi added that the framework reinforces Dubai's broader economic and social strategy to invest in local talent, enhance productivity, and secure the emirate's position as a competitive global destination for professionals.
