The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has launched the Dhs 750 million upgrade for Emirates Road, one of the country’s busiest federal highways. The two-year project aims to ease congestion, boost capacity, and create a safer, more sustainable transport network.
The expansion will see the road widened from three to five lanes across a 25-kilometre stretch, starting from Al Badee Interchange to the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain. This will increase capacity to 9,000 vehicles per hour.
A major overhaul of Interchange No. 7 will add six new bridges with the ability to handle up to 13,200 vehicles per hour, supported by 3.4 kilometres of new service roads on both sides.
For commuters travelling between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai, the project is expected to reduce travel times by up to 45%. By easing bottlenecks, the development will also cut emissions from traffic jams and support smoother movement of goods and services across the Emirates.
Authorities confirmed that phased traffic management strategies, detours, and real-time updates will help minimise disruption during construction. The MoEI stressed its commitment to efficient execution while maintaining daily convenience for road users.
