A new era of automation has arrived at Al Maktoum International Airport, also known as Dubai World Central (DWC), with the deployment of six autonomous baggage tractors to support ramp operations.
Global air services provider dnata has introduced the electric, self-driving EZTow vehicles, developed by TractEasy, to transport luggage containers between aircraft and terminal buildings, a role traditionally performed by human drivers. Each vehicle can carry up to four baggage containers and travels at speeds of up to 15kph along pre-defined routes.
The rollout, valued at Dhs 6 million, is expected to enhance operational safety, reduce human error, and improve turnaround times on the ground. While the tractors currently operate at Level 3 autonomy, requiring minimal oversight, dnata plans to upgrade to Level 4 by early 2026, moving toward near-full automation.
The initiative also allows existing ground staff to transition into more complex roles, reinforcing a shift toward smart, tech-enabled airport operations.
More than just a technological upgrade, this project serves as a proving ground for the future of airport logistics, especially as DWC prepares for large-scale expansion. Once fully developed, the airport is expected to handle up to 260 million passengers annually, making it the largest in the world by capacity.
