Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced a transformative infrastructure upgrade for Al Safa Street, covering the stretch from Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Wasl Street, across a 1.5-kilometre span.
The initiative, called Al Safa Street Improvement Project, will include the construction of two new bridges and two tunnels, along with road widening and advanced traffic signal systems. Once completed, the project is expected to cut travel time on Al Safa Street from 12 minutes to just 3 minutes and double the road’s capacity from 6,000 to 12,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The first bridge, comprising of four lanes, will serve traffic coming from Al Wasl Street towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street.
The second bridge, with two lanes, will connect traffic coming from Al Satwa Road towards Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street.
The first tunnel, comprising two lanes, will connect areas like Sheikh Zayed Road and Financial Centre Street to Al Wasl Street.
The second tunnel, again featuring two lanes, will be located at the intersection of Al Wasl Street and Al Safa Street.
The upgrades will also involve widening of Al Safa Street from three signalised lanes in each direction to four lanes.
His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the project is part of a broader plan to improve road connectivity in the area, which also includes areas like Umm Suqeim Street and Al Wasl Street, and will serve high-density cultural and tourism zones like City Walk, where Coca-Cola Arena is located, and also enhances connectivity with Downtown Dubai and Financial Centre Street.
