A new UAE-based study has revealed some key facts about children's screen habits, showing that 37.7% of children spend more than seven hours a day on screens during the week.

The research, conducted jointly by the University of Sharjah and the American University of Beirut, surveyed parents of 300 children aged 4 to 17 in the UAE. It found a link between excessive screen time and low physical activity levels and associated health concerns like obesity. Nearly 69% of children with high screen time did not engage in any physical exercise, according to the research findings.

Published in the 'Cureus Journal of Medical Science', the paper underscores how screen use increases with age, and how unhealthy habits like snacking on sweets during screen time are becoming common with over 6 in 10 children reportedly doing so.

The researchers urge families to take proactive steps by setting clear screen time limits, encouraging outdoor play, sports, and family outings and also addressing dietary habits during screen use. These practical changes can help promote a healthier lifestyle and reduce the long-term effects of sedentary behaviour linked to excessive screen exposure.

The study is especially timely as UAE schools tighten rules around mobile phone use on campuses, citing similar concerns about mental and physical health. For families concerned about balancing tech and health, the study serves as a call to action, reminding us that digital wellbeing starts at home.
