Dubai To Begin Trial Of Self-Driving Taxis This Year

Dubai is set to begin testing self-driving taxis later this year, marking a major milestone in the city’s journey toward smarter, more sustainable mobility.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that the pilot project will be launched in partnership with Uber Technologies and WeRide, with the self-driving taxis initially available to book through the Uber app. Each car will operate with a safety driver on board during the trial phase.

A full commercial rollout is expected in 2026, making Dubai one of the first cities in the region to introduce autonomous ride-hailing services on this scale.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said the initiative is expected to boost road safety, improve quality of life, and enhance integration across Dubai’s transport network. It also aligns with the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to make 25% of all journeys autonomous by 2030.

As Dubai continues to lead innovation in urban mobility, the trial represents a significant step forward in shaping the city’s future transport landscape.
