Dubai Municipality has signed a strategic Dhs 150 million agreement with Dubai South to build a new, advanced drainage system in the residential district of the rapidly growing urban hub. This development is part of the city’s landmark Tasreef project, a long-term initiative aimed at transforming how Dubai manages storm water.

With this new agreement, Dubai is significantly boosting its flood protection and climate resilience efforts.

The new system includes the construction of a secondary tunnel that will connect Dubai South’s drainage network to the city’s deep storm water tunnel via Expo Road. This move will help reduce flood risk, protect key infrastructure, and support sustainable urban growth.

The Tasreef project, backed by an investment of Dhs 30 billion, is one of the largest infrastructure efforts in the region. Once completed by 2033, the city-wide system will handle over 20 million cubic metres of water per day and increase drainage capacity by an impressive 700 percent.

Earlier phases of the project have already improved storm water resilience in Al Maktoum City, Expo City, and the Airport District, positioning Dubai to better withstand future extreme weather events.
