Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has kicked off a wide-ranging traffic safety campaign for Unified GCC Traffic Week, which runs until 20 April, under the theme 'Driving Without a Phone'. The initiative is being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police, Emirates Driving Institute and Michelin Tyres.
This year's campaign aims to curb mobile phone use while driving, a major cause of road accidents. According to recent studies, drivers distracted by their phones are 80% more likely to be involved in accidents than those under the influence of alcohol, and their ability to react to unexpected road situations is 50% lower.
To spread the message, RTA is conducting activities across schools, universities, public exhibitions and social media. Roadside awareness messages will appear on electronic billboards and in customer service centres, reaching thousands of drivers across the emirate.
RTA confirmed that these awareness efforts fall under the larger umbrella of the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy, which focusses on reducing road accidents and improving public behaviour through education. It also aligns with the emirate’s strategic performance indicators aimed at achieving zero road fatalities.
Drivers are reminded that using a mobile phone while driving comes with a fine of Dhs 800 and four black points.
