Dubai’s pioneering sustainability initiative, Dubai Can – Refill for Life, has successfully reduced the use of over 30 million single-use plastic water bottles since its launch in February 2022.

Led by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, the initiative has dispensed over 15 million litres of drinking water through 53 refill stations strategically placed across the city.

Dubai Can promotes a culture of refill and reuse by offering residents and visitors access to free, safe drinking water, reducing plastic waste and minimising environmental impact. It supports Dubai’s commitment to the UAE’s sustainability agenda and UN Sustainable Development Goals, aligning with Dubai’s Clean Energy and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050.

The initiative has seen strong backing from major stakeholders, including Dubai Municipality, DMCC, talabat and other private sector partners. Refill stations are installed at public parks, beaches and business districts, ensuring easy access to clean water while maintaining the highest hygiene standards.

Additionally, DUBAI REEF, a marine conservation project launched under Dubai Can, is set to enhance marine biodiversity and coastal ecosystems with 20,000 reef modules deployed in Dubai’s waters.

With continued expansion in 2025, Dubai Can is set to increase the number of refill stations, further reducing plastic waste and encouraging sustainable consumption habits across the city.
