Super Block Initiative To Create Car-Free Residential Zones

WAM

Dubai is set to become even more pedestrian-friendly with the launch of the Super Block Initiative, a transformative project aimed at designating residential areas as car-free zones. The initiative, approved by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of the UAE, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, is part of a broader strategy and set of initiatives to enhance social welfare, urban sustainability and digital transformation.

What Is The Super Block Initiative?

The initiative is part of Dubai’s broader vision to create a more inclusive, resilient and future-ready society. It focusses on:

  • Reducing carbon emissions by limiting vehicle access in selected areas.

  • Increasing green spaces to improve residents’ quality of life.

  • Encouraging social interaction through shared recreational spaces.

Aligned with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, the Super Block Initiative will initially target areas such as Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama and Al Quoz Creative Zone. These neighbourhoods will be redesigned to prioritise pedestrians, cyclists and sustainable mobility options
