In a landmark ceremony held at Al Faya Depot, Etihad Rail officially announced its groundbreaking high-speed rail project that links Abu Dhabi and Dubai, marking a significant milestone in the UAE's vision for an integrated rail network

Under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, His Highness Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council,  His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, and other honourable officials and guests, the project was announced in an official ceremony organised by Etihad Rail.

This exciting announcement comes just one year after the launch of the UAE’s first passenger train service, signalling a bold step forward in the country’s transportation evolution. With cutting-edge technology and a focus on sustainability, the new high-speed rail network is set to redefine connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors alike.

Key features and highlights

The high-speed train, capable of reaching speeds of up to 350kph, will connect six strategically located stations:

  • Reem Island

  • Saadiyat Island

  • Yas Island

  • Zayed International Airport (Abu Dhabi)

  • Al Maktoum International Airport (Jebel Ali)

  • Al Jaddaf (Dubai)

This state-of-the-art service is expected to slash travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi by approximately 30 minutes, making it a game-changer for daily commuters and travellers.

Meanwhile, the regular passenger train fleet, operating at 200kph, will expand its reach across the UAE and beyond. The network will extend to key destinations such as SharjahFujairah, and the Liwa Desert, passing through Mezeira’a and its iconic oasis. Plans are also in place to connect the UAE to the wider GCC region once the GCC Railway becomes operational. Each train can accommodate up to 400 passengers, offering a comfortable and efficient travel experience.

Economic Impact and Sustainability

The new rail network is projected to contribute a staggering Dhs 145 billion to the UAE’s GDP over the next 50 years. By seamlessly integrating with existing metro and bus services, the project aims to enhance public transport accessibility and reduce traffic congestion.

Passengers can look forward to world-class stations that blend sustainability with Emirati heritage. These stations will feature business-class loungesretail outlets, and family-friendly amenities, ensuring a premium travel experience for all.

When Can You Experience It?

While the high-speed rail project is already underway, with tenders for project-contracts issued and network designs approved, an official launch date remains under wraps. According to Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, the high-speed train and its infrastructure will be developed in phases over the coming years.

“As of now, there is no estimated time for when it could be ready,” Al Shehhi stated, emphasising the complexity and scale of the project.
