Electric Vehicles In UAE To Soon Have New Charging Fee Structure

The UAE is set to simplify electric vehicle (EV) charging with new, unified pricing. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 81 of 2024, a standard fee structure for EV charging will be introduced nationwide. This new system aims to provide clear and fair pricing, replacing the previously inconsistent costs across different service providers.

According to Khaleej Times, starting from 6 September 2024, the minimum charge will be Dhs 1.20 with additional VAT per kilowatt-hour for express charging and Dhs 0.70 with additional VAT per kilowatt-hour
for slower charging. This change, detailed in the Cabinet Resolution published on 8 July 2024, aims to bring consistency similar to how petrol prices are regulated.

Under the revised structure, the Council of Ministers retains the authority to modify these fees as needed. This includes the ability to add, remove, or make other changes to the fee structure.

The new standard pricing will help make EV charging more predictable and transparent for drivers across the country.

Besides this, the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure and Etihad Water and Electricity launched a groundbreaking partnership, UAEV, to establish and promote fast, accessible EV charging across the UAE. UAEV is the first government-owned EV charging network in the country.

In May 2024, UAEV announced it would set up fast-charging units nationwide, including an initial 100 free charging spots. These will remain free for drivers until the end of 2024, with future pricing details to be announced later.
