The UAE has announced a major update for individuals with expired residency visas. Starting in September, a two-month amnesty will be in effect, allowing those with expired visas to either renew their status or leave the country without facing fines. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port (ICP) Security shared this initiative on social media, encouraging residents to use this grace period to update and regularise their documentation.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, ICP, said, "The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security aims to provide violators with a new opportunity to regularise their status in accordance with the law, as a gesture that reflects the values of compassion and tolerance upon which the UAE is built."

The ICP stated that details on the procedures for this amnesty will be announced shortly.

What Are The Residency Visa Rules

Residence visas in the UAE vary based on their type and sponsor, ranging from one to three years for sponsored visas, and up to five or ten years for unsponsored visas. Recent updates allow for long-term residence visas of five and ten years, subject to specific conditions.

For dependents, the visa expiry will align with that of the sponsor. Individuals aged 18 and above must complete a medical examination, pass a security check, and apply for an Emirates ID card through the ICP.

Documents Needed For Residency Visa

To apply for a residence visa, you will need the following documents:

  • A recent colour photo with a white background
  • A copy of the dependent’s passport
  • Emirates ID application receipt
  • Certified housing lease or proof of property ownership
  • A copy of the sponsor's passport with a valid residence permit
  • Sponsor's job contract
  • Medical fitness certificate (for dependents over 18)
  • Entry permit in the UAE
  • Attested birth certificate for children
  • Mother’s residence photo for newborns

For divorced women or widows:

  • Divorce or death certificate
  • Proof of housing
  • Evidence of financial independence

For students:

  • Certificate from the educational institution confirming the study duration

Steps For Renewing Visa And Fines

To avoid fines and legal issues, make sure your sponsor renews your residence visa before it expires. Renewing your visa will keep you living legally in the UAE. Overstay fines are now standardised at Dhs 50 per day for all visa types, including visit, tourist, and residence visas. Previously, the fine for residence visas was Dhs 25 per day, but it is now Dhs 50 per day.

Keep in mind that when your visa expires, your Emirates ID card also becomes invalid.
