In an effort to preserve the rich history, culture, and heritage of various sites in Abu Dhabi, more than 60 plaques will be installed at significant landmarks. These plaques will designate these landmarks as modern heritage sites, with most of them dating back to the 1970s and 1980s. The registration of each landmark on Abu Dhabi's Historic Environment Record will further firm their historical importance.
The inaugural plaque was recently installed on the façade of the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, the first structure to receive the prestigious designation of a modern heritage site. The Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, (DCT), announced this during a ceremony held at the site. Founded in 1981, the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation is located on the oldest historical site in the capital, Qasr Al Hosn. This site is not only historically important but also serves as a central venue for a variety of workshops, events, and classes, including those focused on traditional Arabic calligraphy.
His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, (DCT), said: "The iconic buildings recognised as modern heritage sites are integral to Abu Dhabi’s cultural fabric, reflecting our rich heritage and evolution. Therefore, it is our mission to safeguard and promote these landmarks and we commemorate the first step in our journey as we highlight and protect Abu Dhabi's modern heritage sites for future generations."
In July 2023, DCT disclosed its identification of 64 buildings and sites that urgently needed protection as part of their initiative to safeguard Abu Dhabi's heritage.
The Modern Heritage Conservation Initiative by the department focuses on the preservation and restoration of these buildings based on their assigned grades. Demolition applications for these structures are strictly prohibited.
Among the buildings on this list are significant landmarks such as Al Manhal Palace, where the UAE flag was hoisted upon joining the UN in 1971, the former Adnoc headquarters, the Central Bank, Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce, Zayed Sports City, and the primary bus terminal in the city.
Additionally, the list includes less familiar places like parks, water tanks, a health complex, one of the early residential towers, and even a group of ghaf trees within the city.
