Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the achievement of a significant milestone, with 50% completion of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project. This initiative comprises the development of four bridges spanning a total distance of 2,874 metres, strategically designed to accommodate a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.

The project is in response to the directions of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It aims to improve Dubai's road infrastructure to accommodate the city's ongoing urban and population growth. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, is overseeing the project.

The project is part of a plan to upgrade Garn Al Sabkha Street, an important road connecting Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Its goal is to ensure smooth traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street.

On this, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors, RTA said, "Once opened, the project will cut down the distance and the journey time by 40% for traffic heading from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Sharjah. It will slash the peak hour journey times from 20 minutes to just 12 minutes. It will also diminish the journey time by 70% from 21 minutes to 7 minutes for traffic going from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road right to Al Yalayis Road towards Jebel Ali Port."

4 Bridges

Speaking about the bridges, the first one covers a distance of 943 metres at the junction of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street. This two-lane bridge in each direction can handle 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, enhancing the traffic movement between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The second bridge, spanning 601 metres, has two lanes. It directs traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street Westwards to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road northboun, leading to Al Qusais and Sharjah. The bridge can handle 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The third bridge, at 664 metres, has two lanes, ensuring seamless traffic flow. It prevents congestion from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road going northbound to Al Yalayis Road toward Jebel Ali Port, accommodating around 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The fourth bridge, 666 metres long with two lanes, facilitates smooth traffic by preventing overlap from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road for Dubai Production City entrances. It can handle approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour.
