The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) has announced the aim to reduce 40% of carbon emissions by 2030.
The UAE updates its goal to reduce carbon emissions from 31% to 40%, following the approval of the Third Update of the country’s Second Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), under the Paris Agreement.
The decision also strengthens the goal to reach net zero emissions by 2050.
Over the course of three years, the target for the UAE was initially set at 23.5% in 2020, further raised to 31% in 2022, and now at 40% in 2023.
Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment said, "We have progressively raised ambition in less than three years, highlighted by the commitment to reduce emissions by 23.5% in our Second NDC, decreased this further to 31% in our Second Updated NDC, and pushed our efforts even further to reach a reduction of 40% in our Third Update of our Second NDC compared to business as usual."
The UAE has been officially classified as a developing country, however, is following the model set for developed countries for its Third Update of its Second NDC.
