ScratchJr
Coding is the new literacy! ScratchJr brings the popular programming language Scratch to a younger audience of kids ages 5-7 in a fun and easy way through designing their own interactive stories and games. The creators of Scratch at MIT felt that the language of coding should be available for everyone, just like writing, and is taught to thousands of kids ages 8 and up at schools worldwide. ScratchJr is the introductory language aimed at younger children using carefully designed features to match their cognitive, personal, social, and emotional development. ScratchJr enables creativity and expression while they snap together graphical programming blocks to make characters move, jump, dance, and sing. They can also modify characters in the paint editor, add their own voices and sounds, insert photos of themselves, and then use the programming blocks to make their characters come to life. In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively. They also use math and language in a meaningful and motivating context, supporting the development of early-childhood numeracy and literacy. With ScratchJr, children are not just learning to code, they are coding to learn.
ScratchJr is available for both iPad and Android tablets.
